Suburban Muse is our small archive of late-teenage portraits — the moment between bedroom poster and front-door key, when somebody is rehearsing the version of themselves they want the world to see. We pull from the editorial register that defined nineties magazine work: Corinne Day, early Juergen Teller, the steady honesty of available light through a kitchen window. Each frame is held close, monochrome, and quiet. We're not chasing glamour. We're chasing the part of a face that hasn't decided yet — the half-second of self-possession before the smile, or the long look out a passenger window on a Sunday afternoon. The palette is held to silver, ink and paper-white, with skin treated honestly: freckles, oil, the small flaws that make a portrait actually feel like a person. Hung as a single piece, a Suburban Muse print works the way a good black-and-white photograph always has — it slows the room down. Hung as a pair or a trio, the series builds a quiet domestic theatre of attitude, weather and unfiltered hours.
