Splash #5

Splash is our studio's ongoing meditation on color in motion — pigment, silk, ink and air rendered in a photographic register, then frozen at the exact instant before the form collapses. Each piece in the series treats the white ground as breathing room, the way a couture editorial treats negative space: not empty, but charged. The palette stays disciplined — usually two or three hues that argue, fold, and finally agree on a shape. We're drawn to the moment a gesture becomes architecture, the half-second when fabric or fluid forgets its own weight. The references are mixed: Hiroshi Sugimoto's stillness, the chromatic restraint of a Bottega campaign, the unbothered confidence of Ellsworth Kelly. The result is abstract work that still feels figurative — there's always a body somewhere in the folds, a posture, a held breath. Splash sits well in rooms that already have something to say: a concrete loft, a quiet kitchen with good stone, a hallway that needed one strong note. Hung as a single statement or a pair, the series is about the pleasure of looking at color do something — not decorate, not behave, but move.
