Coastal Dream

The Mediterranean series is a working journal of the south — coastlines, kitchens, late afternoons, stone walls warmed by a sun that has been doing this for centuries. frida shot the set on film over a series of summers in the Cyclades, in Mallorca, on the Ligurian coast, never quite holiday and never quite reportage, more the visual diary of someone who keeps coming back. The palette holds: bleached blues, warm limestone, paint-flake greens, the white that is never quite white. People appear small if they appear at all. The architecture does most of the speaking — chapels, low villages, terraces, shutters closed against the afternoon. There is no drama and no postcard. Just a region observed in its own register, a little tired, a little timeless, very lived-in. Each frame stands alone but the set reads as a single mood — the Mediterranean as a long warm exhale rather than a destination. Hung together they read as a room; hung apart, each one carries enough quiet to anchor a wall on its own.
